Google AI Mode in Malaysia: how your business shows up
Google AI Mode works in Malaysia in English, Malay, Chinese and Tamil. How it picks the businesses it links to, what Search Console shows, and what to fix.

When a Malaysian customer asks Google AI Mode for a supplier, it can name businesses and link to their websites. AI Mode is the chat-style tab in Google Search. Google says a page needs nothing extra to be linked beyond being indexed and eligible for a normal search snippet (Google AI features guide).

Roughly half of Malaysians now use AI to look things up, and 78% of recent AI users who search with AI still use Google as part of the process, so Google is still part of the journey for most of these AI searchers (Vodus, 2,556 adults, census-stratified).
Key takeaways
- AI Mode works in Malaysia, and Google's help page lists Malay, Chinese and Tamil among its supported languages alongside English (Google Search Help).
- No special optimisation is needed. Google says pages only need normal Search eligibility (Google AI features guide).
- Business Profiles and Merchant Center feeds help. Google says they "can help your products and services to be visible in both AI responses and other Google Search results" (Google optimisation guide).
- Search Console has a dedicated Generative AI performance report, launched on 3 June 2026 and live for all websites since 31 August 2026 (Google Search Central Blog, Search Console Help).
- AI Mode "has surpassed one billion monthly users" worldwide, Google said on 19 May 2026 (Google I/O 2026).
What is Google AI Mode, and how is it different from AI Overviews?
Google AI Mode is a separate, conversational search experience inside Google Search. AI Overviews are the short AI summary Google places at the top of a normal results page, and only when it judges the summary useful. The AI Mode tab is something the searcher opens on purpose, for questions that need comparing or reasoning.
Google says the two "may use different models and techniques, so the set of responses and links they show will vary" (Google AI features guide). A link in an AI Overview does not guarantee a link in AI Mode, and our guide to Google AI Overviews for Malaysian businesses covers the summary box in depth.
| Classic Google results | AI Overviews | AI Mode | |
|---|---|---|---|
| When it appears | For most searches | When Google judges it useful | When the searcher opens it |
| How Search Console records your position | Normal position | Every link in the box shares one position | Normal position; each follow-up counts as a new search |
| Google Analytics 4 channel | Organic Search | Organic Search | Organic Search |

Is AI Mode available in Malaysia, and in which languages?
Yes. AI Mode is still part of Google Search and is live in Malaysia. It launched here in August 2025 in English and added Malay in October 2025. Google's help page now lists Malay, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional) and Tamil among its supported languages (Google Search Help). Open it at google.com/ai or in the Google app.
Those launches were reported by Malaysian outlets SoyaCincau, Pokde and Lowyat.NET. If your customers mix languages when they search, read how AI search handles Malay, Mandarin and Manglish.
How does Google AI Mode choose which websites to link to?
Google AI Mode picks its links from Google's own search index. It splits a question into smaller related searches, a method Google calls query fan-out, then writes an answer from the pages those searches return. Google says its AI features are "rooted in our core Search ranking and quality systems" (Google optimisation guide), so pages that rank well for those smaller questions are more likely to be picked up.
"Under the hood, AI Mode uses our query fan-out technique, breaking down your question into subtopics and issuing a multitude of queries simultaneously on your behalf."
Elizabeth Reid, VP, Head of Search, Google, 20 May 2025
A question about aircon servicing in Subang Jaya, for example, could branch into prices, how often to service, and nearby companies with good reviews.
A page for every variation backfires: Google says doing so "primarily to manipulate rankings or generative AI responses in Google Search violates Google's scaled content abuse spam policy" (Google optimisation guide). Other reasons a business goes missing from AI answers are covered in why your business is not showing up in ChatGPT or Google AI.
Do you need special "AI Mode SEO" to show up?
No. Google states that "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary" (Google AI features guide). To be eligible as a link, a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet, which is ordinary SEO.
Google's May 2026 guide adds that you do not need llms.txt files, content "chunking" or special AI schema (Google optimisation guide). Normal structured data is optional, but should match the visible page (AI features guide).
How do local businesses show up in Google AI Mode answers?
AI Mode can name local businesses in its answers. Google says AI responses can include "information about local businesses", and that Merchant Center feeds and Google Business Profiles "can help your products and services to be visible in both AI responses and other Google Search results" (Google optimisation guide).
Google publishes no local rules specific to AI Mode. The closest guidance is its advice on ranking in local results (Google Business Profile Help):
- "Local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity."
- "More reviews and positive ratings can help your business's local ranking."
The same page advises you to "provide complete and detailed business info", so keep your hours, areas served and categories accurate. Our guide to how Google Business Profile feeds AI search in Malaysia goes through the profile in more detail.
Can you see this traffic in Search Console and Google Analytics?
Partly. Clicks and impressions from AI Mode are counted in Search Console's Performance report, under the "Web" search type (Google AI features guide). Google launched a separate Generative AI performance report on 3 June 2026 and rolled it out to all websites on 31 August 2026. It shows impressions only (Search Console Help).
Google documents no way to see AI Mode on its own: the Generative AI performance report lists AI Overviews and AI Mode together, with tabs only for pages, countries, devices and dates (Google Search Central Blog). In Google Analytics 4, Organic Search includes "Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode" (GA4 Help), and our guide to seeing ChatGPT traffic in Google Analytics shows where other AI assistants appear.
One Search Console setting, the Search generative AI control, includes every site by default; if it is switched to exclude, your site disappears from AI Mode and AI Overviews, though Google says the control "isn't used as a ranking or inclusion signal affecting other parts of Search" (Search Console Help).
What should a Malaysian SME do first to show up in AI Mode?
Work in roughly this order: make sure Google can index and show your pages, check the Search generative AI control, fix your Google Business Profile, then answer customers' longer questions on your website. None of it needs new tools, files or special markup.
- Check key pages are indexed, visible and in text. Use URL Inspection in Search Console, check no developer-added "noindex" or "nosnippet" tag hides a page or its text, and keep important content in text (AI features guide). If a page is missing, work through why a website does not show on Google.
- Check Search Console > Settings > Search generative AI and confirm your site is included.
- Complete your Google Business Profile, giving Google "complete and detailed business info" (Google Business Profile Help).
- Ask every completed customer for a Google review, and reply to reviews.
- Write one clear page per service, per language: what it is, areas covered and a typical RM price. In AI Mode, people ask "questions nearly three times longer than traditional searches", Google said in October 2025, so each page should answer the full question (Google blog).
- Measure monthly. In the Generative AI performance report, check Malaysia in the Countries tab and compare which pages gain AI impressions each month. Clicks sit in the normal Performance report, under the Web search type.
- Test monthly. Ask google.com/ai ten real customer questions and note which businesses it links to. Google's stronger "Pro" option in AI Mode needs you to be signed in to a personal Google Account, so test the same way each month (Google Search Help).

Common questions
Frequently asked questions
- How do I turn on Google AI Mode in Malaysia?
- There is nothing to switch on. Google lists three ways to open AI Mode: go to google.com/ai, type a question on google.com and tap AI Mode, or tap AI Mode on the Google app home screen. Google's AI Mode help page lists Malaysia among the countries and territories where AI Mode is available.
- Does Google AI Mode work in Bahasa Melayu?
- Yes. When AI Mode reached Malaysia in August 2025 it only worked in English, Pokde reported. Lowyat.NET reported Malay support in October 2025, and Google's AI Mode help page now lists Malay, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional) and Tamil among its supported languages. A business should answer customers' questions in the languages they actually search in.
- Can I stop my website from appearing in Google AI Mode?
- Yes. In Search Console, go to Settings, then Search generative AI, and choose to exclude your site. The control covers AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative AI features in Google Discover. If you manage your site in more than one Search Console property, check each one. Google says a change generally takes a few days, and some content may take longer. An excluded site gets no traffic or impressions from these features.
- Does Search Console show Google AI Mode clicks separately?
- Not as a separate line. Google counts AI Mode clicks and impressions in the Search Console Performance report, under the Web search type, together with normal results. The Generative AI performance report, launched on 3 June 2026 and available to all websites since 31 August 2026, shows impressions only and lists AI Overviews and AI Mode together, with tabs for page, country, device and date.
- Is Google AI Mode free?
- Google's AI Mode help page describes AI Mode with no fee or subscription requirement; only extra use of its Gemini 3 Pro model is tied to Google AI plans. Gemini 3 Pro is offered to users in Malaysia, in English, with daily usage limits. At the limit, you can wait for it to refresh or upgrade to a Google AI plan, where plans are available for your region and account type.
