Can I do AEO myself in Malaysia, or do I need an agency?

What a Malaysian SME can genuinely do free, where doing it yourself stops working, and what an agency actually adds. With the free checklist, in order.

Two routes drawn on cream paper from one shared starting point: a short ink-black line that stops after a few marks, and a champagne-gold line that carries on through a long repeating grid of measurement ticks.
The free half of AEO is a short checklist. The paid half is a measurement that keeps repeating.

Yes, a Malaysian SME can do the foundational half of AEO itself, for free. Claiming your Google Business Profile, verifying in Bing Webmaster Tools, letting the AI crawlers in and rewriting your pages to answer real customer questions cost nothing but time. What you cannot do alone for long is the measurement: repeating a fixed prompt set across engines, month after month.

Key takeaways

  • Google says there is no special AI markup: "there's also no special schema.org structured data that you need to add" to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode (Google Search Central).
  • A Google Business Profile is free. Google says you "can manage how your business shows up on Maps and Search at no charge" (Google Business Profile Help).
  • Blocking one crawler removes you from ChatGPT search: "sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers" (OpenAI).
  • Writing style is a measured lever. The Princeton-led GEO study found quotations, statistics and cited sources can "boost visibility by up to 40%" in generative engine responses (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024).

What can you genuinely do yourself, for free?

Six things, all free and all within reach of a non-technical owner. Claim your Google Business Profile, which Google says lets you manage how your business shows up on Maps and Search at no charge. Verify in Bing Webmaster Tools. Turn on IndexNow. Allow the AI search crawlers. Rewrite your top pages answer-first. Then test the answers yourself.

In order, because the order matters:

  1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile. Google states you can manage how your business appears on Maps and Search "at no charge" (Google Business Profile Help). Categories, service area, hours and photos, all filled in.
  2. Verify in Bing Webmaster Tools. If you already use Google Search Console, Bing can import those sites directly, and "the imported sites will be automatically verified, eliminating the need for manual site verification steps" (Bing Webmaster Blog). ChatGPT's search features run on their own crawler, separate from Google's.
  3. Switch on IndexNow. It is free, and it flips indexing from waiting to notifying. You host a key file at your domain root and post your URLs, and "submitted URLs will be automatically shared with all other participating search engines" (IndexNow documentation).
  4. Check you are not blocking the retrieval crawlers. OpenAI is explicit that sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers" (OpenAI). Read your robots.txt before you buy anything.
  5. Rewrite your top five pages answer-first. Put a plain 40 to 75 word answer under each heading, phrased so it survives being quoted alone.
  6. Test it. Ask the engines your customers' real questions and record what comes back. Our guide to checking whether ChatGPT recommends your business sets out the prompts and the scoring.

One Malaysian warning before you research. On 13 August 2026 we asked ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude, with web search on, whether a business here can do AEO itself or must hire an agency. All three answered about Authorized Economic Operator customs accreditation. Write "answer engine optimization" in full, a collision our guide to what an AEO report must show meets from the other side.

Does your website need special AI markup or an llms.txt file?

No, not for Google. Google Search Central states plainly that no new machine readable files, AI text files or special schema.org structured data are needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page qualifies by being indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Anyone selling you an AI file as the fix is selling you nothing.

The documentation leaves no room to read it another way:

"You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features. There's also no special schema.org structured data that you need to add."

Google Search Central, AI features and your website

Structured data still earns its place as entity hygiene, helping engines resolve who you are and where you operate. It is simply not a secret door. Our guide to making a website AI-ready in Malaysia covers the honest version, and almost all of it is ordinary indexable-site discipline.

What actually moves the needle once the basics are done?

Evidence in the writing. The Princeton-led GEO study, published at KDD 2024, tested content changes across a large benchmark of queries and found that adding quotations, statistics and cited sources can boost visibility by up to 40% in generative engine responses (Aggarwal et al., 2024). That is a writing discipline, not a plugin, and it is the part most DIY attempts abandon by month three.

Note what that finding does not say. It does not say write more, or write longer. It says every claim on your page should carry a number, a name and a source, which is a harder habit than it sounds when you are also running a business.

Where does doing AEO yourself stop working?

At measurement. AI answers move on their own, so one test proves nothing. MaxAEO re-ran 1,247 buyer-intent prompts daily for 90 days across eight platforms and found about 17% of prompts return a different set of recommended brands than they did the day before (MaxAEO, 2026).

That is the wall every DIY effort hits. Checking once and seeing your name is not evidence the work succeeded, and checking once and missing it is not evidence it failed. Separating a real trend from daily noise needs the same questions, on the same schedule, against a baseline.

So what does an AEO agency actually add?

Three things you are unlikely to sustain alone: a fixed measurement routine run to a schedule, the writing discipline that keeps adding sourced evidence every month, and the technical work that keeps a site indexable while it grows. Acclaira's own program is RM2,500 a month, billed from day one, month to month. Nobody honest sells a guaranteed AI ranking.

Price the work before you price the agency. Our guide to what AEO should cost in Malaysia sets out what a monthly fee should include, and how to choose an AEO agency and the red flags covers what to ask before signing. If a proposal leans on a proprietary AI file or a special schema, hold it against Google's documentation above.

DIY or agency: how should a Malaysian SME decide?

Decide on capacity, not budget. If someone in your business can give this two focused hours a week, and will still be doing it in six months, start yourself and hire later. If nobody can, the choice is not DIY versus agency. It is agency versus nothing, and nothing is what most SMEs quietly pick.

The workCan you do it free? What it really costs you
Google Business Profile, complete and currentYesAn afternoon, then monthly upkeep
Bing verification and IndexNowYesAn hour, one time
Crawler access in robots.txtYesMinutes, if someone can read the file
Answer-first rewrite of key pagesYesA weekend per handful of pages
Sourced, evidence-dense new content, monthlyIn theoryThe habit almost nobody keeps unpaid
Fixed prompt set, several engines, tracked monthlyRarelyDiscipline plus tooling, indefinitely

The first four rows are genuinely yours. The last two are where money buys something real, and where a business already running its Google Business Profile for AI search properly starts to compound.

Frequently asked questions

Is free AEO worth doing, or is it a waste of time?

It is worth doing, and it is the correct first step. Claiming your Business Profile, verifying with Bing, opening the crawlers and answering real questions plainly are the conditions everything else depends on. An agency that skips them is charging you for content on a site the engines cannot reach. Do these first, whether or not you hire anyone.

How long before doing it myself shows a result?

Nobody can give you a date, and no honest agency will. The pace depends on how often your pages get re-crawled, how deep your site is and how active your reviews are. Because about 17% of prompts change their recommended brands daily (MaxAEO, 2026), treat month one as a baseline and read the trend.

Why do searches for "AEO Malaysia" return customs results?

Because AEO in Malaysia usually means Authorized Economic Operator, the Royal Malaysian Customs accreditation. On 13 August 2026 we asked ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude whether a Malaysian business could do AEO itself, and all three answered about customs. Prompt using "answer engine optimization" in full and you will reach the right subject.
