ChatGPT has wrong information about my business (Malaysia)
ChatGPT or Gemini got your business wrong? You cannot edit the answer. Here is the order a Malaysian business fixes its sources in, and how to report it.

Someone shows you a screenshot. ChatGPT or Gemini has told a customer the wrong address, a price you stopped charging, or a service you do not offer. There is no edit button and no delete button. What you can change are the records the engines read, the crawl access they need, and how consistently your name appears across all of them.
Last updated: 7 September 2026. Every Google, OpenAI and SSM route below was read off that organisation's own published page; Perplexity's is documented by Semrush.
Key takeaways
- Google says it in its own help pages: "AI Overviews can and will make mistakes." The report control sits under the thumbs-down icon (Google Search Help).
- A blocked crawler beats a corrected page. Sites opted out of OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers" (OpenAI).
- Your Malaysian record has its own deadline. SSM asks a registered business to notify a change of particulars within 30 days, for a RM20 fee (SSM).
- The audience is already there. 67% of Malaysians say they have used an AI tool in the past 3 months (Vodus AI Consumption Study Malaysia 2026, 2,556 adults, census-stratified).
Why does ChatGPT have wrong information about my business?
Two different machines produce a wrong answer. One writes from what the model already holds about your business. The other runs a live search and summarises what it finds today. A third failure is name confusion, where another company's details land on yours. OpenAI concedes the live-search side is fallible: "Search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect."
The scale has been measured. According to a study by the European Broadcasting Union and the BBC, which with 22 public media outlets across 18 countries assessed more than 2,700 responses to news questions from ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity, 45 percent had at least one significant issue, sourcing worst of all at 31 percent.
"They have not prioritised this issue and must do so now"
Jean Philip De Tender, EBU deputy general, and Pete Archer, head of AI at the BBC (Al Jazeera, 22 October 2025)
Agreement is what the engines hunt for. As Semrush puts it, "The more sources that agree on a detail, the more likely AI is to treat it as fact." With one address on your site, another on your Google listing and a third in an old directory, the engine picks. Being absent from AI answers altogether is a different problem: why your business does not show up in ChatGPT.
Can I edit or delete what an AI says about my business?
No. No engine gives a business owner a control panel over its own answers. You can report a specific answer, and you should, but Semrush states the limit plainly: platform reports have "no guaranteed turnaround and no confirmation that a correction will be made". The reliable lever is the source material underneath the answer.
It still earns the two minutes. OpenAI says domains reported through its content form may be reviewed by its Model Quality team, "which may apply filters or other mitigations to help prevent ChatGPT from relying on unreliable sources". You are flagging a source, not deleting an answer.
What should a Malaysian business fix first?
Fix the records in order of authority. Your own website first, then the Google Business Profile, then the SSM record if the change is a legal one, then the directories. In that order every later correction agrees with an already-corrected source instead of adding a fourth version of the truth.
- Your own site. Put the correct name, address, phone number, hours and services in plain text, not inside an image or a slider. Google asks for structured data that matches the visible text, and for Business Profile information that is up to date.
- Your Google Business Profile. Sign in with the linked account and edit. Two traps: "We review your changes before we update them live on your profile", and if you moved premises "you must verify your business again". Strangers can suggest edits to listings they do not own. See does Google Business Profile matter for AI search, or why your business is not showing on Google Maps.
- Your SSM record, if the change is a legal one. A change of business address, business type, branch particulars or owner information goes to the Registrar within 30 days, for a RM20 fee, on Form B — or through EzBiz online for everything except a change of owner or partner. Your SSM business profile settles the official name and address.
- The directories you forgot. Old listing sites, your LinkedIn page, industry portals. That is usually where the stale detail lives.
| Record | What it is the authority for | What changing it involves |
|---|---|---|
| Your own website | The name, address, phone number, hours and services, in plain text | You publish it yourself, and the structured data should match the visible text (Google) |
| Your Google Business Profile | The listing a customer, a map and an AI assistant read for location and hours | "We review your changes before we update them live on your profile", and after a move "you must verify your business again" (Google) |
| Your SSM record | The official registered name and address of the business | Notify the Registrar within 30 days, RM 20, on Form B, or through EzBiz online (SSM) |
| Directories and old listings | Nothing on their own, but they add or remove agreement between sources | You claim or correct each one; this is usually where the stale detail is still sitting |
Can ChatGPT even read your corrected page?
Check your crawler access before you rewrite a line, because a page ChatGPT cannot fetch cannot carry your correction. OpenAI is explicit: "Sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links." If a developer once blocked AI crawlers in your robots.txt, you are fixing a page the engine never reads.
OpenAI recommends the opposite: "To help ensure your site appears in search results, we recommend allowing OAI-SearchBot in your site's robots.txt file". Allowing only ChatGPT-User, the agent that fetches a page when someone clicks, does not help, because "ChatGPT-User is not used to determine whether content may appear in Search". Nor is the change instant: "it can take ~24 hours from a site's robots.txt update for our systems to adjust". The rest of the checklist is in how to make your website AI-ready.
How do I report a wrong AI answer to ChatGPT, Google and Perplexity?
Every engine hides the same control somewhere slightly different, and each in-product route starts with the thumbs-down icon under the answer. Report it while the answer is on screen, because the report carries the question with it. Screenshot it first, with the date, so you keep your own record.
| Engine | Where the control is | What happens next |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT, in the answer | Thumbs down under the message, Select an issue, then Safety or Legal concern (OpenAI) | Feedback only, filed under Terms of Use or legal concerns |
| ChatGPT, to report a source | OpenAI's content reporting form | Reported domains may be reviewed by OpenAI's Model Quality team and filtered out of future answers |
| Google AI Overviews | Thumbs down at the bottom, then Report a problem, or the three-dot menu at the top right (Google) | No published turnaround; the feedback feeds Google's quality review and carries "your most recent search query and its search results" |
| Perplexity | Thumbs down, or the "..." menu, then the Report link (Semrush) | Feedback only, with no published turnaround |
How long before the answer changes, and how do I keep watch?
Nobody publishes a turnaround, and an agency that promises one is guessing. The only primary-source number is Google's own crawl range, and it is wide: "crawling can take anywhere from several days to several months, depending on how often our systems determine a page needs to be refreshed". Asking Google to recrawl the page shortens the front of that range, and guarantees nothing.
So measure rather than wait. Google confirms pages appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted in Search Console's search traffic, where "they're reported on in the Performance report". Re-ask the same question in the same engines every few weeks and keep the screenshots. The method is in how to check if ChatGPT recommends your business; what a monthly report should contain is in what your AI SEO agency's report must show.
What if AI keeps confusing my business with another company?
Name confusion is a distinct failure and it lands hardest on small firms. Searchable, an AI-visibility vendor, studied London companies and published the results as sponsored content: chatbots confused or misattributed SME brand names five times more often than large-company names, at 4% versus 0.7%. The fix is dull and it works: one exact name everywhere, the one on your signage and your registration.
Google's Business Profile rule says the same: "Your name should reflect your business's real-world name, as used consistently on your storefront, website, stationery, and as known to customers." Place matters too, because ChatGPT search "rewrites your query into one or more targeted queries" for its search partners, using the rough location read from the customer's connection. A Klang business written up as a Kuala Lumpur one is handed to the wrong search.

Common questions
Frequently asked questions
- Does reporting a wrong answer inside ChatGPT actually change anything?
- Sometimes, and only indirectly. The thumbs-down inside ChatGPT is filed under Terms of Use or legal concerns. The route that reaches OpenAI's Model Quality team is its content reporting form: reported domains may be reviewed there, and filters or other mitigations applied so ChatGPT stops relying on unreliable sources. There is no confirmation and no published turnaround, so treat reporting as a supplementary step and fix the underlying sources first.
- My website is already correct. Why is the AI still wrong?
- Two reasons. The engine may be answering from what the model already holds rather than from a live fetch, and a corrected page changes nothing until it is crawled again. Google says crawling can take anywhere from several days to several months. Check as well that your robots.txt file is not blocking OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot, which would keep the page out of ChatGPT search answers entirely.
- Do I need to add an llms.txt file so AI can read my site?
- No. Google states you do not need to create machine-readable files, AI text files or markup to appear in its AI features, and that there is no special schema.org structured data that you need to add. What matters is that the important content sits in plain text on the page and that your structured data matches what a visitor can actually see.
- Does updating my SSM record change what Google and ChatGPT say?
- Not on its own, but it settles the official version. SSM asks a registered business to notify a change of business address, business type, branch particulars or owner information within thirty days, over the counter on Form B, or online through EzBiz for everything except a change of owner or partner, for a RM20 update fee. Your SSM business profile is then the document you cite when correcting a listing.
